Exploring the Maritime Traditions of Diverse Cultures and People

Water covers 71% of the earth’s surface. 97% of that water is found in oceans as salt water. The ocean is home to 228,450 species – and as many as two million more that remain a total mystery. The ocean supplies half of our oxygen.  

The ocean provides lots of food – much more than just seafood. Ingredients from the sea are found in many foods such as peanut butter and soy milk. Many medicines that help fight cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease contain ingredients from the ocean. Truly, the ocean is our planet’s life support system.  

Water is not only a natural resource, but also a means of transport, recreation and economic activity. Water has always, and continues to play a prominent role in the social and cultural lives of all people.  

Maritime Culture Currents is an education initiative of the Seafarers Ministry of the Golden Gate [SMGG].  Culture Currents explores the significance of maritime traditions in the development of various cultures in the world. Maritime Culture Currents also examines the contributions, influence and impact of distinct cultural groups upon global maritime traditions and practices.  

Throughout the year, SMGG will present Maritime Cultural Currents through special events, exhibits, lectures, panel discussions and forums both online and in-person. The series will highlight the individuals, issues and accomplishments of multiple cultures and their engagement with the maritime world.
